Emily Warren Roebling~Brooklyn Bridge – Ava

I am Emily Warren Roebling. My husband is Washington Roebling, which was the son of the Brooklyn Bridge designer John A. Roebling. John died of tetanus, so Washington continued the Brooklyn Bridge’s construction. While he was working on the the project, he developed caisson disease which affected him so badly he could not proceed in his work. At this point I was going to complete the Brooklyn Bridge and step in as the “first woman field engineer”. I was the only person to visit my husband during his sickness and relay on the information my husband told so I could report the progress of work on the bridge. After 14 years and the work of about 600 workers, the Brooklyn Bridge was finally done in 1883.

Emily Roebling – Bri

Emily Roebling, wife of John Roebling’s son. Took over after John Roebling and his son died. She had a big role and made the Brooklyn Bridge a success. She also ended up being the first person to go on the bridge by carriage When she stepped in to help create the bridge she stepped in as the ” first woman field engineer” and she also saw out the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was complete in the year 1883. She also gave a speech on opening day of the bridge and people responded well to her speech. Today the bridge holds a plaque that is dedicated in memory of Emily, her husband, and her father in law, John Roebling.

Grant Writing Brainstorm – Ava

Why do I think health care deserves grants.
Well first of all health care is probably one of the most important things we need to survive properly. Most people will need some sort of treatment in their lives, and without health care would their be a hospital? Would there be a doctor? One hospital trip for 3 days can cost up to $2,000 – $50,000 and the longer you stay its only gets higher. So yes health care is extremely important and grant hospital is a good example of what we need everywhere.

First Post/Practice

My partner and I are in the 8th grade and we first decided to use blogger for our blog posts we had to upload as class assignments. But blogger ended up being the worst choice. It was hard to understand how to work blogger and also when I uploaded I couldn’t see it after. So I told my teacher and we made a WordPress for my partner and I.

3D Representation of “Who You Are” – Ava

I made a tv out of cardboard that is showing the things in my life that represents the things I love and who I am. It shows I have many qualities, and let me tell you, I couldn’t even fit all of them in there. In the cardboard tv “screen” I put animal pictures because I love animals and in the future I might want to volunteer at the SPCA. I put a quote that says “I am a very outspoken person, and if something makes me uncomfortable, you will know that it makes me uncomfortable, but that’s as far as it goes.” – Lea Michel. It has a drawing of a heart I drew because I want to get better. I have a cooking type picture because I like to make things delicious! Anjelah Johnson is there because my mom says I act like her and everyone says I’m hilarious. Then it has pictures of school activities I do like basketball and choir.

Irish Immigration Diary – Ava

My name is Braden Callaghan and I am just a little boy from Ireland. My family and most people from where I’m from live off of potatoes with a great deal in poverty. Once the blight got to the potatoes they all turned black and rotten, so we couldn’t eat them anymore. Since we couldn’t eat the potatoes 1,000,000 Irish people died including my mom and younger brother during the time of the 1850’s. People were saying there would be a better chance to live if you immigrated to America but it is very expensive. My dad and I didn’t want to die of starvation so we decided to be a stowaways and sneak my way into America. On the ship ride it was really crowded and very nauseating, there were tons of rats and human waste. Coming to America took 2-3 months and getting food for myself wasn’t easy. Of course I had my father with me so at least I wasn’t by myself so he got most of the food for us by sneaking into the kitchen and grabbing the leftovers. I did my part by begging for food from the other passengers because who could resist an adorable little boy. When we finally got to America it wasn’t at all like we thought it was, there wasn’t gold sidewalks or anything like that. The Americans hated us, they weren’t welcoming at all. They thought we were annoying and they pictured us like apes. My dad got a job that obviously didn’t pay well but we had enough money for food. America was rough for us but if we stayed Ireland we probably would have died.

19th Century Settler Letter – Ava

Dear father, I don’t know if your dead yet but I’m sorry if I haven’t been close with you the last couple years. This is your son Edward Crowell if your wondering. I feel as if I should tell you what I’ve been up to, so where should I begin… Well we can start by saying I can speak to my pet bird. Yes I know that sounds crazy but I have managed to communicate by learning the squeaks and squawks she makes. Her name is Kathryn by the way. She can also speak English, Kathryn is very intelligent. That’s besides the point. Most of the time she isn’t with me at all because I have trained her to go on trips and always come back to me to share what she has discovered. Towards the end of the year 1802 she heard some news the French paid 15 million dollars for land that stretched from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Kathryn said she heard it was called the Louisiana purchase, and it brought much more space and land for new settlers, and nearly doubled the size known to be America. She traveled around a bit more to look into what was going to happen and then she heard about the Lewis and Clark expedition. One year later in 1804 two American explorers Lewis and Clark were sent by president Thomas Jefferson to explore the recent Louisiana purchase of America. This journey covered 8,000 miles over the span of two years and was the first expedition and route that led to the Pacific Ocean. They traveled from St. Louis Missouri, all the way to the coast of Oregon and back again. Kathryn actually got to travel with them and of course the native, sacagawea who helped them along the way. Then there was something called The manifest destiny which was a belief that the new land of America would help fuel western settlers and native Americans to either leave or move around, and to also welcome in new settlers. They wanted more land to start new lives, and a better and stronger country and government that included healthy farm life. Americans wanted to explore the westward because they felt the need to check out the newly bought land and explore the area. It’s kinda crazy I know all this stuff just from a bird. I don’t even know if she’s lying to me or not but I don’t think she can make all that up she probably heard that from somewhere. So maybe you can write me back and tell me what has been going on in your life since I left. Take care. – Your son.

Irish Immagration Diary – Bri

Dear Diary, 1845
My name is Claire. I have six members in my family which includes, my mother, my father, my two brothers, my one sister, and me. I live in a small poor village, this hasn’t been the best year of my life, this year we have been living with a potato famine called Blight. And it has not done anyone in the village any good. Our crops and livestock are slowly dying because of it and now everyone in the village is worried that they are going to die. But I still have hope that we can find a way to end the potato famine as soon as possible. If this keeps happening then my family might have to immigrate. The potato famine was also known as mass starvation and a disease.

Dear Diary, 1846
Life isn’t getting any better and the potato famine is getting worse. I’m afraid that my family is going to immigrate since potatoes are a big thing to grow and sell, it also feeds the livestock and the people in Ireland. On the bright side of immigrating my family would have a better life, a better job, people might be nicer to us, and we might be able to make more money.
Dear Diary, 1849
I know I haven’t written in this in a while, but just realized that I forgot to mention that my family is Catholic. Anyways the reason why I am telling you this is because in Ireland being Catholic is a big thing here. That also makes up 80% of people in Ireland. Also in case if you don’t know what famine means it means lack of food.
Dear Diary, 1850
I’m really mad right now because the English has created an Anti-Irish Sentiment which basically means that one group of people are better than another group of people. I also hate that Irish people and Black people are considered the lower class of society.

Dear Diary, 1852
I haven’t given an update in my life in a while so I would like to say that my family did immigrate to America and we love it here, my parents do in fact have a better job it’s also has a better pay. And I have had a better life here since I made a lot of new friends and people have been a lot nicer to us here. I guess that’s enough said for now I’ll write more later.
