Emily Warren Roebling~Brooklyn Bridge – Ava

I am Emily Warren Roebling. My husband is Washington Roebling, which was the son of the Brooklyn Bridge designer John A. Roebling. John died of tetanus, so Washington continued the Brooklyn Bridge’s construction. While he was working on the the project, he developed caisson disease which affected him so badly he could not proceed in his work. At this point I was going to complete the Brooklyn Bridge and step in as the “first woman field engineer”. I was the only person to visit my husband during his sickness and relay on the information my husband told so I could report the progress of work on the bridge. After 14 years and the work of about 600 workers, the Brooklyn Bridge was finally done in 1883.
